Prince George's Coalition for Young Artists
Monheit Concert
Grammy-nominated vocalist, Jane Monheit, performed with the young artists of Suitland High School's Center for the Visual & Performing Arts on November 1, 2014. She was outstanding! Monheit performed jazz standards as the young artists sung the background vocals.
Monheit has been a leading light in both the jazz and cabaret worlds since emerging as a finalist in the Thelonious Monk Institute’s 1998 vocal competition. In addition to her own recordings, she has worked alongside the likes of Terence Blanchard, Tom Harrell, and Ivan Lins. She says that the distinctive, continually surprising sound ofthe new release, The Heart Of The Matter, is the result of an especially satisfying collaboration with Grammy-winning producer Gil Goldstein, who has previously worked with such giants as Wayne Shorter, Gil Evans, and Pat Metheny. The pair first joined forces for part of Monheit’s 2009 album The Lovers, The Dreamers, and Me.

In addition, a special performance with the young artist was given by Suitland High School Alumni CHARTEL. She is now a graduate of Temple University with a degree in Classical Voice Performance who has been singing background  for BET Music Matters Artist, Leah Smith, joining her on stage at BET's 106th and Park, The BET Honors, and numerous other stages along the East Coast. She has been a regular feature of the jazz band, Vertical Current, opening for the likes of renowned artists such as Grammy Award-winners Robert Glasper and Eric Roberson. As a solo artist she has opened for gospel music icon, Deon Kipping. In 2013, she was nominated as Best New Artist in Philadelphia. She has had the honor of performing musical tributes to soul singer Carol Riddick and legendary producer James Poyser of The Roots Band.
In late August 2014, Chartel will release her first single,"Make Up Your Mind To Love" from her forthcoming debut EP.
